Using AI In Your Business.
Recently, there has been a lot in the news regarding artificial intelligence, often known as AI.
AI has transformed digital interactions over the last few years. While many AI tools can enhance your website or digital marketing efforts, there are many significant drawbacks to consider before just ploughing on utilising AI left right and centre!
Here are a few potential pitfalls to consider.
The first would be what is known as the loss of personal touch.
Many AI chatbots and recommendation engines can provide quick and accurate responses, however, they often lack human warmth, and empathy and take away the ability for customers to speak directly to an individual or an expert.
Chatbots can be great – but many customers still want to be able to call you up for a chat!
For some industries where trust and personal relationships are crucial, for example, things like law, healthcare or funeral services, an overreliance on AI could feel cold and impersonal and deter potential customers from getting in touch.
The second would be Higher initial costs and ongoing monthly subscriptions.
Whilst AI technology has become more accessible, and affordable, it can still be expensive to implement and ongoing monthly subscriptions can all add up.
For small businesses in particular this expense can outweigh the benefits.
Budget constraints may mean that some of the only basic tools can be used as more of the premium ones require an ongoing upgrade or a monthly fee to be paid.
The third would be data privacy and security concerns.
For website owners, this means gathering, storing and analysing user data, which can introduce significant privacy and security risks.
Some website users may be more cautious when interacting with your website if they can see AI is in use or at play, as they may not know what safeguards are in place for their data.
The next area would be potential penalties from search engines.
Many website owners now use AI tools to optimise content creation, from generating things like blog posts, all the way through to helping to write meta descriptions and make on-site optimisations.
However, Google and the other major search engine engines have cracked down on low quality AI generated content, that’s designed purely to build out your website from an SEO perspective.
Whilst certain aspects of AI content can be helpful, it often lacks the detail that humans would put in and it could ultimately result in a penalty from some search engines if detected.
The best case would be you didn’t receive a penalty, but maybe the content doesn’t rank, which makes the whole kind of time invested in creating the content worthless if you were creating it purely to help the Website rank.
Relying too heavily on AI for content creation could harm search rankings if the algorithms perceive it as spam or low quality. Search engines now reward websites to offer better quality high quality engaging content that people find useful and engage with.
The way we view AI is that balance is the key.
Whilst certain aspects of AI can undoubtedly add significant value to your website and even speed up processes within your business an over reliance on it can be dangerous.
When considering AI, remember there is no one size fits all solution and by carefully weighing the benefits of limitations and risks and rewards, website owners can make more informed decisions about whether AI is right for what they need right now.
