The Evolution of Search Engine Optimisation (SEO)

The Evolution of Search Engine Optimisation (SEO)

Search engine optimisation, often abbreviated to SEO has become the fundamental foundation of most digital marketing strategies and has been around for the last two decades.

Since its early days, SEO has really evolved, initially, it was very easy to cheat the search engines and rank a poor or even an average website for important keywords, fast forward to 2024 and SEO has become a sophisticated ever evolving field that, rewards websites that give excellent user experience high-quality content and technical precision.

In the past SEO strategies largely revolved around targeting exact match keywords and often engaging in a practice known as keyword stuffing.

The goal used to be to rank for specific phrases by including them as many times as possible on your webpage, often leading to awkward low quality content that looked like it had been written by a five-year-old.

Google and the other major search engines have become far more sophisticated now and prioritise intent over keywords and reward websites which provide a fantastic user experience and high-quality content.

Google’s frequent algorithm updates constantly change the goalposts but what we do know is that websites that fundamentally provide great content and a brilliant user experience will only benefit from their changes moving forward.

A few years ago SEO primarily revolved around people browsing on their desktop computers, Mobile SEO was more of an afterthought and many websites were not even optimised for mobile devices.

But like we all know, most people now reach for their iPhone before they do reach for their desktop or laptop and in recent years Google has transitioned to a mobile-first policy, which means it primarily uses the mobile version of a website for ranking and indexing.

Mobile usability is obviously a crucial factor along with other elements of user experience like page load speed, stability and content.

Content is definitely King. Content has always been important but in the past quantity was often more important than quality.

SEO strategies are used to focus on churning out large volumes of Content in the hope that this will drive more traffic.

Content quality is now one of the most critical components of search engine optimisation, and again the recent Google algorithm updates have penalised those websites with poor quality content and rewarded those websites with fantastic content.

If you are looking to improve your rankings in the search engine you should focus on creating in-depth valuable content that addresses users questions and provides them with useful answers and interesting information.

You should aim to keep your website updated to maintain its relevance and to ensure it meets guidelines by showcasing your expertise and or authority in a particular field.

You should avoid creating content just for the sake of creating content and instead prioritise high-quality pieces of content that provide the user with real value.

A few years ago artificial intelligence (AI) was not seen as significant and manual processes dominated everything from keyword research to content creation and link building.

Fast forward again now to 2024 and artificial intelligence and machine learning are now key to search engine optimisation.

Many people now embrace artificial intelligence-led tools to help streamline their repetitive tasks including keyword research and technical audits however you should never rely solely on AI-generated content. It is fine to use AI to supplement human creativity but you should always ensure that the content produced is original and high-quality, search engines can spot content that is just turned out by AI software and it is very difficult to get content like that to rank on its own merits.

Search engine optimisation has definitely changed drastically over the last few years. It has become even more user-centric, even more data-driven and influenced by advances in technology.

Gone are the old days of keyword stuffing and black hat tactics to try and cheat the system, today search engine optimisation requires a strategic focus on quality content, user experience and adapting to the rapid pace of algorithm changes.
