What is a Sales Funnel?
The phrase ‘sales funnel’ is frequently used but often sounds more complicated than it is.
Put simply, a sales funnel is a representation of the customer journey which outlines the steps that potential buyers are more than likely to take before making a purchase.
– Imagine that everybody starts at the top of the funnel but only a small proportion of them proceed all the way to the bottom of the funnel, which is when a sale is made.
This helps marketers and sales teams understand where prospects may drop off and what actions are required, in order to push them towards making a purchase.
There are typically four main stages within the sales funnel and these stages correspond to a customer’s level of engagement and readiness to make a purchase.
The first stage is awareness.
This is at the top of the funnel when a potential customer first learns about your brand, your product or your service.
At this stage, prospects are not necessarily ready to buy yet but they are becoming aware of the problem or need your business can help them solve.
Marketing efforts such as social media posts, blog content, search engine optimisation strategies and even Google Ads (PPC) are often used to attract attention at this stage.
The objective here is to capture the attention of the audience and make them aware of your business and services/products.
The next stage in the funnel is the interest stage.
Once people have become aware of your brand, they enter this stage by showing interest in what you have to offer.
They may be browsing your website, reading blogs, signing up for newsletters or downloading e-books or requesting other information.
The next stage of the sales funnel is the decision stage, which is when prospects have moved from general interest to consider making a purchase.
They are now often comparing your product or services with your competitors. They may be reading customer reviews or looking for pricing information.
This is a critical and very important stage of the sales funnel. It helps if you can build trust and persuade the prospect to choose you over your competitors.
To help improve your chances of success here you should offer compelling reasons for people to choose your brand, including things like discounts, case studies or testimonials.
The final stage of the funnel is known as the action stage. This is at the bottom of the funnel and when the prospect takes the action, whether that is making a purchase, signing up for a subscription or requesting a quotation or a demo.
The goal here is to make the purchasing process as smooth and slick as possible to help convert the lead into an actual customer.
You should always think about how you can optimise your sales funnel to make it more effective and to do this you can help to improve the process by considering the following tips.
Consider creating relevant compelling content. Use analytics to track metrics at each stage of the funnel and identify where prospects are dropping off, automate where possible, as automation tools can help to nurture leads at the top and middle of the funnel which can free up your time to focus on closing customers at the bottom of the funnel.
Whilst each business is different, there are typically these four stages to the sales funnel which we have highlighted above.
Understanding and effectively managing your sales funnel is key to driving sales and growing your business as by nurturing prospects through each of the above stages and addressing their needs at the right time you are more likely to turn leads or prospects into actual customers.
